Our story

In 2011, all of this was just a disused piece of land and a seed in the minds of a few dedicated local folk. As a direct result of the views of local residents through public consultations, an agreement between NCC, Cantrell Primary School and BFG was formed, providing a whopping 20 year lease on the land!

A phased plan was developed, to include food growing and wildlife areas, a community orchard and outdoor kitchen.

In July 2012, BFG opened its gates for the first time, with local residents volunteering their time to transform the unused land into an area fit for growing fruit and vegetables.

Cantrell Primary School were provided with an access gate from their playground and offered exclusive use of the Community Garden on Tuesdays and Thursdays as an outdoor classroom.

The summer of 2012 saw the first of our Family Sessions, which were popular from the beginning, including free workshops such as building bird boxes, gardening skills, environmental crafts and healthy cooking.

From then, we have gone from strength to strength, becoming a charity and employing 3 workers to ensuring the projects sustainability.

What we do

Bulwell Forest Garden is open 4 days a week, with volunteering opportunities in gardening and wildlife conservation—or just as a lovely space to come and hang out!

Our primary aim is to grow fruit and vegetables together as a community, then share it out.
If you volunteer with us, you’ll get to take some produce away for free.
If you don’t volunteer with us, you can give us a donation for seasonal produce which is advertised at the gate.

We offer regular family activities during school holidays such environmental crafts, gardening, and healthy cooking workshops as well as adult learning courses throughout the year. Check our events page for more info.

You can also sample our produce at our Big Friendly Lunch Club every Friday during the summer, where we cook a two course vegetarian meal with produce harvested that morning. See our Lunch Club section for more info and recipe ideas.

Health and wellbeing is the heart of everything we do at BFG, including weekly yoga sessions during the summer.

Our vision

Develop a community garden to include food growing, general wildlife areas, and community spaces in order to create a stronger sense of community responsibility and ownership.

Provide greater access to affordable fruit and vegetables as well as opportunities for local people and the wider community to learn about and be involved with growing food.

Support healthy living as well as environmental and food growing education and training for people of all ages, including community groups and schools.

Meet the team

Barbara

Development Manager and Forest School Practitioner

I’ve been involved with The BFG since its humble beginnings and am responsible for the strategic development, grant writing, and event planning—which is probably just as well, as I’m the least green-fingered one amongst us!

Shelly

Community Gardener

I work along side Jo and Shelly tending to the crops, and love getting stuck into a big woodwork project. Need a mud kitchen, I’m your woman!

Wendy

Acting Committee Treasurer and Volunteer

I’m the one looking after the pennies! You can usually find me with the flowers in the sensory garden.

Robert

Committee Member and Volunteer

I’m one of the founding members of Bulwell Forest Garden—and unofficial Groundsman!

Adele

Volunteer Coordinator and Forest School Practitioner

I have been helping out on the garden since 2014 and my job is to help with the day to day garden tasks such as growing produce, teaching others how to grow, and ensuring our projects meet our volunteers’ needs. I also deliver our Wildhearts Forest School programme.

Zena

Operations Administrator

David

Committee Chair and Volunteer

I started volunteering at BFG in September 2020 whilst on furlough from Rolls-Royce because I wanted to give something back to my community. As well as Chairing the Management Committee, I help out at Forest School and other events.

Rezi

Lunch Club Coordinator

I run the Big Friendly Lunch Club every Friday—I work together with our volunteers to harvest food and make a meal for everyone to share. I have my own catering company called “Good Mood Food” which specialises in vegetarian and vegan food.

Maureen

Committee Member and Volunteer

I’ve always loved gardening so, after I retired, I found myself volunteering at The BFG. As a Trustee, I draw on my business skills to help strengthen our planning, governance, and financial sustainability.

Jo

Educational Gardener and Forest School Practitioner

I work with volunteers and visitors to grow pesticide-free produce and to develop the site as a haven for wildlife. I also deliver our “Let’s Get Growing” programme, supporting people in our community to grow their own fruit and veg at home.

Kirsty

School Groups Facilitator

You'll more than likely find me in our woodland area, teaching ancient skills and techniques to harness the power of nature!

Melkorka

Trustee and Volunteer

Jill

Committee Secretary and Lunch Club Volunteer

I’m a regular volunteer at the Big Friendly Lunch Club. My passion is making cakes from whatever is growing in the garden (not just fruit but dandelions, kale, herbs, parsnips…!) and I usually run the Cafe at our community events.

Committee Member and Volunteer
